El Día que me murieron / The day they ‘died’ me

Galería Rafael Pérez Hernando. Madrid, 2009

–No te moriste, te murieron. No desapareciste, te desaparecieron, –decía desconsolada.

I once was surprised to hear a family member whisper sadly, while talking to a loved one’s photograph, “You never died, they killed you. You didn’t disappear, they  erased  you”.
Taking this tragic but beautiful and powerful story as a reference,  I imagined being the photographed person who somebody cries for, and decided to paint “The day they ‘died’ me” (or “The day they killed me”).
